Semaglutide
About
Semaglutide is a synthetic analog of the endogenous incretin glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), belonging to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class. It is the only drug in its category with FDA approval in both oral and injectable forms. Research has explored its hypoglycemic effects, its role as an appetite suppressant and weight-management agent, and its association with reduced cardiovascular risk in type 2 diabetes. It is engineered to resist degradation by the dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-4) enzyme, extending its activity.
Research Applications
- Anti-obesity and weight loss
- Glycemic control
- Cardiovascular health
- Neuroprotection
Mechanism of Action
Semaglutide mimics GLP-1 to stimulate insulin secretion and reduce glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, lowering fasting and postprandial blood glucose, while resisting DPP-4 degradation for a longer duration of action.
